June 11

It was really hard to get up for class this morning, but I made it.

After class a few of us caught a cab to Duolun Road Cultural Street, apparently the former residence of some literary giants, and really just a charming cobbled area with a few shops, where we browsed jewelry and propaganda.

We walked down another street, where restaurants were pushing fliers in our hands with features from their menus. We settled on one with good pictures, and had a nice little lunch of lobster soup, steak cubelets with peppers, mushroom curry, beef with fried rice, and spicy chicken with soy.

Then to Lu Xun park, which was actually pretty fun. We were just looking for scenery, but we found bumper boats.

The first boats we found were pretty tame

Then all hell broke loose

We each got a bag of balls to shoot at other people, so soon the water was covered with them

There was also an interesting plastic ball that you get inside and roll around on in the water. We’ll be going back to try that one out.

I thought these guys were sitting on pumpkins at first

Back to the hotel, worked out, showered, and dressed for dinner. We decided to turn a different direction out of the hotel, as we’ve been eating a lot on the same pedestrian street. Off the other way we walked to an area with a couple night spots, and lots of neon lights.

The pizza place we’d seen a sign for was closed, which had unfortunately gotten my hopes up for western food. Across the parking lot there was a tea house that appeared to have a decent mix of a menu. We sat down and found stuff we liked, only to find out a lot of it was unavailable (fries, potato chips, spring rolls, etc). We all managed to settle on something, and put in our order. Sadly enough, nothing ended up being very good. Edible for the most part, but rather disappointing. We learned from a girl at the next table that most people don’t come to this place to eat, they come to play cards and maybe drink tea, because the food isn’t very good (I wish we’d talked to her BEFORE we ordered). But to be honest, this was one bad experience, and we’ve had so many great ones that I’m not going to complain (beyond this paragraph).
