Well, we weren't actually there yet, so in the morning we woke up early and caught a train from Bari to Rome (about 4½ hours). Once in Rome, we caught a taxi to our hostel, the Orsa Maggiore, which is a former convent (and no boys allowed). Since we were in the neighborhood, we took a walk over to Vatican City, and took pictures of St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square (which is actually an oval). We also mailed MawMaw a postcard from the Vatican post office. Once we were done with that, it was still quite early, but since we hadn’t really done much in the way of planning, we didn’t know what else to do, so we just walked around for a few hours. It worked out great, we got to check out the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi fountain, Piazza Navona, etc. We took a guidebook recommendation and had dinner at Cacio e Pepe, a neighborhood eatery where we enjoyed wine, bread and oil, first course pasta dishes, and second course dishes, all for only 20 euros a person. Then on the walk home we got a lovely night view of a few of the scenes from earlier.
