January 10

Up at 8:30am so I can catch breakfast. My roommates won’t make it in time and ask me bring back some rolls if available. I eat my own scrambled eggs and toast, and bring them back a plate of toast with butter and jam. I am nice.

The first half of the day we are hanging out at the beach here.

Tried to have hermit crab races

We’re spirited

So spirited we kill sand dollars for pleasure

Iguanas!

We play in the waves a bit, lay out a bit, and then have lunch under the thatched hut roof. It’s pasta salad, raw vegetables, and chips. Then after lunch most of us get on the bus to go to another beach.

On the way we stop in Puerto Lopez and buy ice and beer (or in my case, premium malt beverages). It’s possibly the first time we’ve had the chance to have our drinks on ice (the ice chest was carrying lunch, and so it’s now empty and available).

This beach we’re going to is more of a cove, with a pretty view and smoother waves. We enjoy some body surfing, and more laying around.

My pedicure still looks nice

They like to give us a lot of chocolate here. This was probably my favorite, but when I tried to buy some to bring home I couldn’t find it.

We pick up at 4, when this beach closes, and head back to our beach. I take a cold shower (either our hot water is not working, or someone has used it up) and walk out on the beach to catch the sunset.

After dark I join up to play that Ecuadorian card game until dinner.

Dinner is shrimp, which I don’t eat, so I order some French fries. Then our tour guide finds out I don’t eat shrimp, and gets me some fish, which is pretty delicious. I think it’s been cooked in butter.

After dinner some more of that card game, and then a little salsa dancing. I’m back in the room to edit more pictures. Tomorrow is an excursion to an island off the coast, that’s the closest thing we can get to the Galapagos (without going 600 miles out to the Galapagos). Rumor is blue footed boobies abound.

By the way, if this blog isn’t enough for you, I have started a Project 365 blog at this link: every day mary. (Project 365 is just a concerted effort to take a picture every day for a year)
