Hi Mary,

What type of camera are you using to take your pictures? They look really great! I need a new camera.

Just came back from a 3 week trip in China last month. Still writing my website for it!

At the time I was using a Canon PowerShot.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for your reply. Do you know which model of the Canon PowerShot you are using?

Thanks.

Mine was a Canon PowerShot A710 IS. But I bought it 2 years ago, so it's not what I'd get now. There are newer (and cheaper) models with the same, if not more, features. The IS series is a little bulkier, it uses AA batteries, and I prefer to have a camera of some substance. There's also the SD series, which uses a lithium battery, so those are a lot slimmer. Both have a lot of the same features. Megapixels aren't really that important, but I do appreciate some optical zoom.

Thanks for your fast reply. I know what you mean about having zoom.

I just got back from a 3 week trip in China (and therefore my interest in your blog!) using a Kodak EasyShare. It was great for pictures within 13 feet but, for anything beyond that, forget it. The flash wouldn't work beyond that. And the 5X optical zoom wasn't very adequate.

I had a 35mm Nikon F5 before with a great zoom lens and it took great pictures while traveling. But it's heavy and bulky. On this trip I decided to go 21st century and bring a digital camera. But I'm not really a camera expert. Now I realize I should have brought a camera with a better zoom on this trip.

I also prefer cameras that take AA batteries because they can be easily replaced. If your proprietary battery runs out of juice, what do you do? You're stuck. This was the situation a few times with people in my tour group. I just kept snapping away.

I also brought a video camera with 34X zoom so I got some great videos too!

My Canon Powershot actually only had 6x optical zoom. My flash probably didn't work very far either, but I'm sorta anti-flash anyway. I use a lot of the manual features when I have the chance, mainly for macro.

I shoot with a Panasonic Lumix dmc fz50 now, and it has 12x optical, which is pretty great. I want DSLR, but don't really feel like dropping the cash on one yet. Considering all the options out there in superzooms, it almost seems unnecessary to invest in all the different lens. And for traveling I agree the extra bulk is unnecessary, when a lot of the point-and-shoots will give you amazing pictures.
